5 Tips On Picking The Right SEO Keywords

28th June 2019 | | Blog, Marketing, Search Engine Optimisation

When it comes down to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) one of the most important steps is picking the right keywords and keyword phrases. Increasing the overall traffic to your site is a priority, but attracting the right type of audience is a necessity. Choosing the most effective keywords to connect with your target market can take time and a lot of research, however, the results will be worth it!

So with that being said, what are 5 tips for helping you choose the right keywords for your site.

      1. Think Like A Customer

Identify your target audience and try to put yourself into the shoes of a customer when you create your initial list of keywords. Ask yourself, “If I wanted to find one of these products or services, what would I type into Google?” Consulting others is always a good idea too, bouncing ideas off friends, family members, or even current customers to get their opinion on phrases they would likely use when searching for your products and service.

     2. Study The Competition

Create a list of who your main competitors are and go through their websites to see what keywords they are targeting. Take a read through their content and view their meta-tags in order to work out what they are choosing to focus on. Taking a peak at your competitors will not only help you see what you could be forgetting but also help towards broadening your list of ideas too.

3  Understanding The Long Tail Keyword

Long tail keywords are pretty much a combination of three or more words and phrases. Now, while long tail keywords tend to boast lower search volumes, they do generally attract more traffic which is relevant and will be typically less competitive, oh and also easier to rank as well! Try and opt for long tail versions that help to specify your product or service.

      4. Use Keyword Research Tools

The use of the Google Adwords Keyword Tool in order to research your potential target keywords. With the use of these tools you can then gather data on keyword volume and trends, keyword competition, similar keywords and more.

      5. Analysing The Results

Once you have chosen your keywords, don’t forget to monitor them and analyse the results. There are often some trending, along with new ones that your competitors may be using. Make sure you don’t forget to utilise your chosen keywords wherever possible! Insert your keyword in blog posts, social media posts and on-site content. The more you use keywords within your content, the easier it will be for your target audience to find you.
