How do I get my dental practice website to rank in Google?

It is well known that if you would like your dental practice website to be found in Google, you need to have a search engine optimisation strategy in place to out rank your competition. SEO can be a minefield- after all, you’re trained as a dentist, not a marketer! Even if you feel that you have got to grips with it all, Google updates their algorithms so often, it’s difficult to stay on top.

For example, when Google scans your site for information, it no longer pulls out the keyword phrases it thinks are relevant and pairs them to user queries. Instead, there’s an intermediary step. Google interprets the data on your website, and begins to form its own conclusions about what your site and your business really delivers- which can make ranking a nightmare unless you’re ticking all the right SEO boxes.

So what are these boxes?

  • Keywords– these are still important, so if you want to be found for particular words, they must be in the title, Meta description and somewhere else on the page you want to rank (H1 tags are ideal!)
  • Frequency- don’t keyword stuff! Mentioning your keyword once within the body copy is enough for it to rank well if the back coding as mentioned above is up to scratch.
  • Use natural language, use human phrases such as, ‘Children’s dentist in Bath’ rather than more ‘robotic’ terms written purely for the search engine’s benefit.
  • Don’t focus on one phrase for the entire website, diversify your keyword strategy, else it could become repetitive and even earn a penalty.
  • Gain natural links– are you a member of a local rugby club? Do you participate in the local community in any way? If they have a website, ask for a link to be added which clicks through to your website- this helps you to gain local authority in Google.
