We are constantly advising clients to often post new content to keep the website fresh and to ensure regular indexing and a blog post is a brilliant way to do this. Not only are you updating the website with new content, but it is also an opportunity to produce interesting and relevant content which can attract more organic visitors. However, a question we often get asked is “How long should blog posts be?” and to answer this question simply, how long is a piece of string?
When it comes to SEO there is not a ‘correct’ length’, you’ll often find articles that indicate you need to write thousands and thousands of words and this just isn’t the case.
Your word count should be as high as it needs to be to answer and satisfy the query someone is searching for.
For example, someone searching “What day is Christmas” does not need to be greeted with a 4k blog article consisting of multiple images and paragraphs going into the history behind it. They are simply looking for the answer in the most efficient way. For some topics of content, longer articles will of course make sense and for others… it will not.
How do you determine the length of your blog post?
The most important thing to do is the keyword research. Spend time searching and looking at the content relevant to yours and look at what is currently ranking. This should give you a rough guideline on how long to make your post.
It is worth to note that you should not only satisfy the query but also satisfy the intent. For example, if a product listing for an e-commerce website is ranking, an informative article is not going to rank for that specific keyword.
