We have been telling our clients that Google are putting more emphasis on mobile usability and how sites are optimised for mobile devices.
Over the last few months Google has started to add “mobile-friendly” labels to their search engine results to indicate to users that the site they are visiting on their mobile device will provide a mobile friendly user experience. They have also added a mobile usability report in webmaster tools to indicate any problems that your site might have on mobile devices.
With the increasing number of searches carried out on mobile devices, it was a matter of time before Google was due to use mobile usability as a ranking factor in mobile search results. Google are looking to add mobile usability to its ranking algorithm on 21st April.
So what can you do to make sure that your site is fully functional on mobile devices?
– check your website using Google’s mobile-friendly test
– if the results indicate no issues then you should be fine
– however if problems are found you might want to consider either converting your website to be responsive (optimised for desktops, tablets and mobiles) or if your website is quite old possibly consider having it redesigned with a responsive design included.
