Six months ago everyone in the office got excited about the announcement of Google+ and what it would mean for our clients. Would this become the new Facebook? Will it be as up to date as twitter? Is this just another thing where I hear about what people had for lunch that day?
However, despite the initial hype, Google+ just seemed to sit there happily in the background, lots of people signed up to it, but not much happened from there. Famously Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook signed up for the service and to this day has never posted.
However, 90million users later, Google+ is starting to turn heads and get us all excited again. Due to algorithmic changes, Google+ personalisation now affects your search results and therefore the ranking of your website due to search plus your world; what you see when you’re logged in may be entirely different to what your friend may see from typing in the same search term. So get engaged with Google+ now or stand to see your visibility and therefore your visitor numbers gradually begin to decline.
It is still early days for Google’s Search plus your world however, now is the time to get involved so that you don’t lose out in the longer term. An advantage of utilising your Google+ presence is that anything you put on your business page can be picked up and ranked for, which you definitely can’t do on Facebook, again helping your visitor numbers. Further, you can also target your messages more specifically by only communicating certain messages to a particular ‘circle’.
A top tip for when you’re just starting out, is to have a google circle named resources. Here you can follow key thinkers in the area to give you advice on how to make the most of your page, we’re all just trying to learn about it at the moment after all.
The key thing to remember with your Google+ business page is to keep it fresh, post quality not quantity, hangout with your customers and post lots of images.
