There are numerous reasons that can affect why your site may not be first in Google.
Even if you have a checklist of all of the known SEO ranking factors and you have worked through them all; there is still no guarantee that you will rank 1st.
The most commonly forgotten factors are:
- You have competitors – Even if your checklist is fully checked off, your competitor may also have a fully checked list.
- The age of your site – A newer website will find it harder to rank above websites with a lot more age. Domain authority consists of many factors, one of those is age.
- Back Link Profile – Your backlink profile may be strong, but there’s always a chance that your competitors may have a stronger backlink profile.
- Spreading yourself too thin – To rank highly in multiple areas (especially those you’re not located in) is extremely difficult. It’s much more valuable to focus on specific areas than to attempt spreading your SEO-ness across multiple areas. The same also goes for treatments.
- Business name – not all SEO analysts would agree, but I feel the business name counts for something. For example, if the search term was ‘teeth whitening Bournemouth’ and the company name was ‘teeth whitening Bournemouth’ then I believe Google may think you’re looking for the company specifically and direct you to it.
We also have to remember that SEO takes time. Most SEO analysts will say 4-6 months until the client sees a difference in ranking, and even then, that’s just a difference. In order to rank highly in competitive areas, this can stretch to a year to a number of years. As long as you can see consistent positive movement then you can be assured that the SEO is working.
