Many dentists see that there is a need for their practice to have a profile on various social media sites, however once they’ve built their page, that’s where the struggle begins. Where do you start? How do you keep it going? How do I find the time? This blog post aims to help with some of those questions.
Everything you read about social media suggests to cultivate your network, but how do you get a network in the first place? A good idea is to start following. Follow/like organisations to do with the dental industry, for example dental health publications, charities and suppliers. Next, think about local businesses in your area such as independent restaurants and local shops. Finally, follow profiles which show off your staffs interests and hobbies to help humanise your staff. Before you know it, your streams will start filling up with lots of interesting people who more than likely will begin to follow you back! However, don’t go too mad and follow hundreds of profiles at once, it’s always better to have more followers than you follow in the long term.
Now you need to start posting! There are hundreds of things dental practices could choose to post about. For example, any courses your team have attended, your opening hours, special offers, practice news. Furthermore, you could share dental health news and articles in addition to dentistry related thoughts for the day. If you can, pictures are also great, so post photos of staff socials, your latest tooth whitening or invisalign case for example.
Remember that the whole premise of social media is that it’s social, so take notice of what your followers are saying and join in the conversation or retweet something you found interesting that one of your followers have said.
Social media does take time and effort to set up and keep going, but it certainly is worth it in the long run; by making your practice seem more personable and have intellectual leadership, giving patients more confidence in your services and hopefully more likely to recommend the practice to their friends.
