Bounce rate is defined as “the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page”. However is a high bounce rate always an indication of there being something wrong with your website?
The following reasons might be why you’re bounce rate is high and would possibly indicate that something needs fixing on your site:
1. Slow page load times
If your webpages take a while to load this is likely to cause people to navigate away from the site straight away. People do not like to wait for long periods of time for web pages to load.
2. Visitors landing on an unrelated web page
People like to land on pages that relate directly to their search query. If your SEO or PPC ads have been incorrectly set up or not optimised effectively many potential patients are going to be clicking through to the wrong page and leaving shortly after!
3. Easy to read content
Whilst having unique and informative content on webpages is important, try not to over do it. Visitors landing on your webpages are likely to scan through a lot of your content looking for the most important bits.
4. Poorly designed landing pages
We like attractive things and that is the same for webpages. An unattractive webpage or a webpage with errors e.g. broken images or spelling mistakes will likely discourage many of us from reading further and our interest in the webpage will likely disappear.
5. Is your website optimised for mobile devices?
We have noticed a relationship between bounce rate and whether or not a website is optimised for mobile devices or not. The high percentage of users nowadays using mobile devices to visit websites means that these websites need to be functional on these devices. If users cannot easily navigate the website and see the content on a mobile device they are likely to go else where.
It’s not all bad however
You could have your pages correctly set up and optimised and still receive a high bounce rate, why? Well, if a patient searched for “dental implants (location)” and from the search results clicked through to your dental implants treatment page, read the information and booked the treatment with your practice and clicked off the website, this unfortunately would still be classed as a bounce. However, we here at Dental Design will study your analytics and determine whether or not your webpages are performing well or if there are any issues that need addressing.
