Google Analytics provides a plethora of information you can spend days pondering over and there are some great tools and reports, some not so great, and some requiring more than a pinch of salt to analyse. However – on the whole – the reporting provided, if done regularly, can provide valuable insight to inform marketing decisions for your dental practice.

Knowing how your dental website performs on a mobile device is the most important metric out there, hence this report is at the top of the pile of essential reports. The mobile performance report shows you how well the website is optimised for mobile and where you can make things better.
Where can I find it?
Accessed through Audience -> Mobile->Overview
Note the sessions, % of new sessions, new users etc. You can see the bounce rate for each device category and the length of time that people are staying on the pages across devices. This can be insightful as if this is falling it could be time to re-think the user experience on the devices?
Want to know exactly where your traffic is coming from? The traffic acquisition report will tell you where your traffic is coming from. You can correlate this data with any offline or other on-line marketing efforts. We would expect to see an increase in direct traffic following an online article with your link that might be shared, or an increase in social traffic if you do some Facebook advertising. Use this report to verify your efforts.

This is a standard report, so you can find it by going to Acquisition -> Overview.
This will give you a quick breakdown of your traffic sources.
Getting a user to come to your site for the first time is great. Getting them to visit again is even better. After all, it is the returning visitors who usually end up picking up the phone and become new patients.
This standard report in Google Analytics will tell you what percentage of your users are coming back to your site.
Where can I find it?
You can find it by going to Audience -> Behavior -> New vs. Returning in your Analytics account.
Usually, the metrics for new and returning visitors are quite different. Returning visitors tend to stick around longer and have lower bounce rates. If this is the case, then this type of behaviour can inform a re-marketing campaign for ad words. If revisits tend to be more engaged, why not advertise to those that have been on your website before?
Your potential new patients will enter your site from all sorts of pages. Some will type in your home page URL directly, some will find a page through search engines, and some others will click on a link shared on your Facebook feed.
This report will tell you which pages visitors are landing on when they first enter your website. Based on data from this report, you can figure out how users are interacting with your site.
For example, if the report shows that some pages have a substantially higher bounce rate than others, you can take steps to make high bounce rate pages more engaging. Also, ensure these pages have all the relevant information and a clear call to action for the user.

Simply running a report is very different to understanding the data, making sense of it and using it to give gleam sound business advice.
