Whether you love or loathe them, it has been rumoured that Facebook are adding hashtags into the mix as part of their latest set of updates. There has not been an official announcement yet, however it’s been widely accepted in the social media world that hashtags will start appearing soon.
Hashtags are apparent across the social networks, most commonly on twitter, Google+ and Pinterest. They allow topics to be categorized and searched for, making it easy for users to insert themselves into current topics of conversation.
The use of the hashtag on Facebook has provoked mixed responses. Many of those who love the idea are excited about the ability to produce cross- platform campaigns with more brand consistency across the social networks.
However, opposers think that it’s a step too far and that Facebook will face difficulty in transferring conversations which traditionally take place on twitter. This is because Facebook is deemed as the more personal social network in comparison to twitter.
There is even a Facebook group circulating with over 10,000 likes at present called ‘This is not twitter. Hashtags don’t work here’. Despite this, Facebook is used to negativity towards changes in the platform’s layout and algorithm, which soon blows over shortly afterwards. The likely outcome is that within a month of hashtag integration, the majority of users may not even remember what Facebook was like before the hashtag!
