Google has produced their 11th annual list composing of terms searched for that year- titled the Zeitgeist list (the spirit of time). The list makes interesting reading, revealing cultural trends or fads plus top searches for not just man made moments, but natural disasters such as the earthquake in Japan too.
In the UK, one of the fastest rising search terms, unsurprisingly, was for the Royal Wedding. However, a less obvious search term with high interest was scampi, in the ‘what is’ category, rising by 80%!
Here is the list of the ‘fasting rising’ searches for the UK:
Royal Wedding, iPhone 5, FIFA 12, Groupon, iPad 2, Ryan Dunn, Adele, Minecraft, Rebecca Black and Ed Sheeran
Here are the top 10 ‘what is’ searches:
What is AV, What is scampi, What are truffles, What are piles, What is 4D, What are cookies, What is copyright, What is Zumba, What is iCloud, What is Probate.
The lists revealed that Brits are technologically savvy with searches for the as yet unreleased iPhone 5 and the iCloud. The list also showed that Britons are inquisitive and like to learn more about complex subjects such as the alternative vote system and how to revise.
Unfortunately, dentistry related terms didn’t quite make Google’s list of top searches in 2011, but there’s always next year!
