Over the last few years, you might have received numerous emails from us about the importance of ensuring your website is mobile friendly. The increasing trend in mobile phones being the user’s preferred device for visiting a website made us think: “is there going to be a significant change happening in the way Google indexes sites?” Well, this significant change is indeed happening.
Google has slowly rolled out their mobile first index. We have seen a few notifications in Google Search Console stating that “Mobile first index is enabled for X”.
Well, if you have a website optimised for mobile then Google will be analysing this version of the website to determine its rankings for mobile AND desktop. There will not be separate indexes for desktop and mobile.
The safest and preferred method for being mobile friendly is to have a responsive website that caters to a variety of screen sizes.
If you have not optimised your website for mobiles, your website will still be indexed by Google but your rankings may start to decrease. As Google will be using their mobile crawler to assess your desktop only website, the user experience will be perceived as poor and as user experience is one of the factors in their ranking algorithm your desktop ranking will be harmed.
It is more important than ever to ensure that your website is mobile friendly. Not only are your desktop rankings now in jeopardy but as most of the website traffic comes from mobiles devices, your conversion rate is also hindered by not being mobile friendly.
