With the recent news that Microsoft will be acquiring LinkedIn, I thought I would share with you another story in the Social Media industry – Instagram has reached 500 million active monthly users!
So I thought to celebrate this achievement I would provide a brief history of how this company got this far.
History of Instagram
6th October 2010 – Founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launch Instagram as a free mobile app
12 December 2010 – Instagram gains 1 million users – just 2 months!!!
January 2011 – Instagram added hashtags to make it easier for users to discover photos
February 2011 – Instagram raises $7 million in funding
26th September 2011 – Instagram has 10 million users
12th April 2012 – Facebook acquires Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock
26th July 2012 – Instagram has 80 million users
17th December 2012 – Instagram updated its Terms of Service granting itself the right to sell users’ photos to third parties. Instagram then retract these terms.
26th February 2013 – Instagram has 100 million users
20th June 2013 – Instagram allow videos on their platform
6th September 2013 – Instagram has 150 million users
24th October 2013 – Instagram launch sponsored photos and videos
12th December 2013 – Instagram add Direct – a feature that allows users to send images to specific people
December 2014 – Instagram announce that they have 300 million users accessing the site per month
October 2015 – Instagram launches Boomerang
22nd September 2015 – Instagram has 400 million users
May 2016 – Instagram changes its look and its icon.
21st June 2016 – Instagram has 500 million users.
