Google’s Head of Webspam , Matt Cutts, posted an interesting webmaster help video this week addressing site size and in particular how many pages a site has and how this can affect the overall rankings and performance of the site.
He answers the question;
Does a website get a better overall ranking if it has a large amount of indexed pages?
He starts by stating that just by having a large number of pages a site won’t automatically rank better than others. So adding more pages to your site won’t help your home page automatically rank better than smaller sites.
He goes on to say that it’s natural though for sites that have more pages to get more traffic because each of those individual pages can also rank for their own set of search queries. This obviously increases the traffic potential as each page can be optimised and gain visits.
He also added that sites with more pages than the average have the opportunity to benefit from increased links. He mentions that across the board generally sites with a larger amount of pages often have more links naturally.
Typically, he adds, sites that have more links pointing to it will have a higher PageRank, Matt explains, “If this is the case we might be willing to crawl a little bit deeper into the website and if it has higher PageRank, then we might think it’s a little bit of a better match for user’s queries”.
This last point implying that whilst having a large site can be more beneficial for optimisation, the quality of the inbound links are still going to play a key role in rankings, much more so than boosting your sites pages regardless.
Larger sites give Google the chance to crawl a bit deeper and find more pages to index, which is great if the links are good quality, the content is rich and the pages are easily crawled. Ensuring the pages of your site fulfil these criteria regardless of how many pages you have is paramount for your sites performance on Google.
