Over the weekend Microsoft unleashed a new website, purely dedicated to encouraging their customers and users to switch from IE6 to a newer version of Internet Explorer. This is a huge step for a large software company to encourage its users to stop using one of its products! Of course you dont have to stay with a Microsoft product, there are a wide range of other available: Firefox, Google Chrome, Safri and Opera just to name a few.
This new website is encouraging, the UK does not have a high percentage of users on IE6, just 3.5%, which if you ask any designer or developer is still 3.5% too much. We are only outdone by Norway (0.7%), Finland (0.7%), USA (2.9%), Turkey (3%), New Zealand (3.0%), Australia (3.2%) and online casino Canada (3.3%).
Being 7th isnt all that bad in the great scheme of thing, especially when you consider that out of the 12% of the entire browser usage that is done via IE6, 5.9% is in China! That means that nearly half of all IE6 users are based in China.
IE6 is now 10 years old, and the most current version that you can download is IE9 so why should you upgrade? Improved speed, tabbed browsing, compatability with the W3C standards, support from Google and YouTube, better privacy settings and better security to name a few.
The web has changed significantly over the past 10 years. The browser has evolved to adapt to new web technologies, and the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari etc help protect you from new attacks and threats.
Which browser you choose to upgrade to is up to you, but with this new development from Microsoft itself, upgrading is now the only realy choice to enjoy all that the internet has to offer safely and securely.
