Tecmark has recently published a report into the UK’s mobile internet usage, analysing the stats and treads for 2010/11. In this blog, I am going to highlight their findings and assess what impact mobile internet usage could have on dental website design and marketing.
Key Findings:
The increase in mobile internet usage can be attributed to 2 things, the development of the 3G internet network, which caters for much faster mobile internet surfing, and the strong sales of the smartphone devices which can utilise the 3G network. Smart phone sales have achieved a considerable 87.2% year-on-year increase in sales compared to just 5.5% for PC’s.
The chart below highlights the percentage of UK website traffic vistited from mobile devices.
Since October 2010, growth has jumped from 4% up to 9% in January 2011 – if growth continues at the same rate, by June 2011 mobile devices will account for 14% of all website traffic.
This statistic clearly demonstrates that mobile usage is increasing, and this in turn means that companies who want to attract new customers using the internet as a marketing channel need to start considering mobile marketing factors in their strategies.
Your website’s display, loading time and whether it contains any flash coding are probably the most important factors to consider. Websites can now detect the device a user is viewing them on and redirect them to a device friendly version. According to the research, a third (33%) of UK internet users would use mobile friendly website versions if they were available.
