Mobile web use taking off, says Opera
Report reveals huge increase in the number of mobile web users both in the UK and globally – is the mobile web revolution imminent?

Use of Opera’s web browser Opera Mini has grown by more than 136 per cent between May 2008 and May 2009, with 25.4 million users collectively viewing 9.6 billion pages in a single month.
Opera’s State of the Mobile Web report, released today, highlights the rapid growth, both in the UK and globally, that mobile web browsing has experienced within the space of a year.
Within the UK, there was an 124.3 per cent increase in page views over the last year, as well as a 49.1 per cent jump in the number of unique users.
According to the report, Google slipped below Facebook as the most viewed web page in the UK, but remains the preferred search engine of choice.
Keeping with the recent trend of increasing data consumption, Opera Mini users generated nearly 160 million MB of data for operators worldwide in May 2009 – an increase of 5.6 per cent since April 2009.
Jon Von Tetzchner, chief executive at Opera, said in a statement: “Searching the web via a mobile device presents an enormous opportunity for both search engines and consumers.”
He added: “As the mobile web becomes more pervasive and more people have their first experience on the web from a mobile device, it will be fascinating to see how these habits might change. We are certainly only at the beginning of the mobile web revolution.”
