Nominet have begun a three month consultation running until 7th January 2013 for whether they should offer uk businesses the opportunity to register .uk domains.
There has been some opposition to the proposal as many brands feel that in order to safeguard their brand identity, they need to buy more domain names incurring additional costs. This opinion is further enhanced by the announcement that these new domains would cost £20 per year wholesale in comparison to .co.uk domains which cost £5 for two years- this is not including additional reseller costs.
Despite this, nominet consider these costs to be justified due to the improved security features which are designed to lower cyber crime.
Eleanor Bradley, nominet’s director of operations told the BBC, “We would do daily malware scanning of these domain names and associated sites and they would be DNSSEC-signed [Domain Name System Security Extensions] – that's a security protocol that adds a digital signature to a domain to minimise the risk of domain-hijacking, and it also ensures that when you are going to go to a domain you reach the one you wanted to reach.
“It would all be brought together with a Trust Mark so that consumers and people visiting these .uk domain names would get an immediate indication of the security and nature of the registration.”
Nominet stresses that this is not a money making exercise- but what are your thoughts?
