Why is site speed important?
Every second counts! It can improve:
- Customer experience
- Lower bounce rate
- Increase conversions
According to the official Google webmaster blog, site speed matters and loading time is a major factor to page abandonment. The average user has no patience for a page that takes too long to load. Google itself spends an awful lot of time checking whether or not your site is keeping up with your competitors. If you are slower, then your place in the search results will suffer.
But that’s not the only important factor here. Site speed improves overall User Experience.
What can we do about it?
- Speed up your home page target load time of 2 to 4 seconds
- Don’t use a cheap hosting provider for your site
- Remove unwanted plugins
- Keep the number of plugins as low as possible. Keep the number of plugins under 20
- Keep your site size low – between 1 MB and 3 MB
- Manage your imagery better – Keep images under 100 KB if possible
- PNGs are great for images with fewer colours or transparencies, while PEGS are perfect for photos
- Understand the performance impacts of Facebook and Twitter share buttons
- Reduce the number of themes, images and backups
- Avoid external scripts where possible
- Use CSS instead of images where possible
- Keep images on your server rather than loading it from another site
- If you have text within an image, get rid of it and use an actual font instead
- Use vector graphics or CSS for things like logos or shading on the page
