The Importance of Image SEO

Whilst many online marketeers focus on a website’s title tags, descriptions and building links to the site, they might be missing out on a underused SEO tactic that could help improve the visibility of the website in search results.

More and more now we are seeing images being displayed in search results and, in a lot of cases, being displayed right at the top.

Images, especially high quality images, are very powerful and can improve the click through rate to your website or social media page. It is likely that Google will be displaying images for many different searches, and it could be a matter of time before searches like “teeth whitening [location]” will start to display images from your website.

Why is this important?

Having your website appear on page 1 of Google is great but having your website’s images appearing as well can only help to improve the visibility of your website and click through rate.

So how can you improve your images for SEO?

Make sure the image itself is:

  • Between 320 and 1280 pixels in size
  • Top quality
  • Has a suitable file name e.g. teeth-whitening-result

On-page factors

  • The file name should contain keywords and these keywords should also be present in the content on the page
  • Add alt tags to the image’s alt attribute

Off-page factors

  • Internal linking to the page with the image will help Google bot find it easier
  • Build high quality links to the page
