The mobile that thinks it’s a PC… Phone containing full version of Windows XP on the way

Windows Mobile: The phone features a fully-fledged version of XP onboard, and can run any Windows-compatible software

A mobile phone is due out at the end of this year which could boast unrivalled features and power – although it might look slightly familiar.

The phone will contain all the usual high-end features, including GPS and Bluetooth, a 4.8in touch screen, WiFi, and a huge amount of storage – and it will run a full version of Windows XP.

The smartphone, created by Chinese company In Technology Group, could usher in a new life for the eight-year-old operating system, which has now been surpassed by Vista and next year’s Windows 7.

It will be able to do everything a computer can do – and may end up giving competitors like the iPhone a run for its money.

The ‘xpPhone’ contains an AMD Super Mobile CPI, with up to 1GB of RAM, which in layman’s terms means it should cope with most tasks thrown at it.

While it might struggle with some high-end programs that require extra juice, such as advanced image-editing software like Adobe Photoshop, it should be able to handle programs such as Microsoft Office and video and music playback.

How Windows XP will translate to touchscreen controls and a relatively small (by computer standard) screen size will have to be seen.

However the phone will have the advantage of being instantly familiar to nearly all computer users, and the plethora of programmes available will offer infinite choice for customisation.

And while Apple’s iPhone will still likely win in the looks and ease-of-use department to begin with, it is likely that people will quickly design programs to change the feel of XP to suit the phone’s small size.

What it won’t do is work as a camera-phone, with just a meager 1.3mp camera which will be best suited for video-calls only.

However the lack of camera is compensated for by a USB port, which will allow the use of any computer peripheral, and a VGA-out port allowing the phone to plug into any computer monitor or many TVs, giving you a fully fledged desktop-like system, or media player, at any time.

The other major flaw is battery life, as it will likely only run for around seven hours with the standard battery, so a charger or spare batteries will be a necessity.

And of course, lastly it’s a phone, boasting GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G connectivity and available in black, red and silver.

While this model will likely be bulky, heavy, and low on battery life, it may shake up the mobile market, which previously has been dominated by the iPhone, with competition from Windows Mobile, Palm and Symbian.

ITG are now taking pre-orders, suggesting the phone will be released in the coming months. While there is no word on pricing yet, it is expected to be available in Europe via online shops.
