Yesterday marked the 21st birthday of the internet, after Sir Tim Berners-Lee, a humble scientist at CERN, made the first ever webpage publicly available.
It’s hard to believe that only two decades ago our lives were completely different and this was mainly due to this innovation.
At its simplest level, the internet was designed as a network of wires which could be accessed in homes and businesses to share information; however, this quickly transformed into an intricate network allowing us to carry out the majority of our business and personal tasks today.
Now on its 21st birthday, the internet allows consumers to do their shopping, for readers to download their books and for companies to base their marketing strategies, notwithstanding dotcom enterprises which simply wouldn’t exist without it.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee was acknowledged for his magnificent innovation in the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony whereby he tweeted to the world ‘this is for everyone’.
