I think more dental professionals are talking about social media than ever before – of these, many seem nervous to get started, or perhaps, don’t really know where to begin. Here at Dental Design we want to help you get to grips with social media and more than that, ensure that you see a return on investment (new patients) for your efforts.
So, before you get started, make sure you know the basics – here are 8 top tips to get you started:
1. Be consistent. You cannot post on your Facebook page or tweet here and there. Plan to spend an hour a day working on social sites. Don’t spread yourself too thin, choose a couple of the best sites and give them the time and attention they need. I would recommend Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
2. Give a common voice to posts and tweets and maintain a consistent tone. You want your social networks to be a fun and friendly place to visit but you also need to keep it professional – there is no place for posts about what you’re having for dinner! Don’t just post a bunch of clone comments with no personality, be interesting and original. Watch your spelling too – poor grammar does not reflect well.
3. Find out what followers are interested in and generate conversations. Don’t be controversial, but do ask questions which will spark a debate. Someone recently asked opinions as to whether dentists should be able to continue to us the title ‘Dr’ on Twitter – this generated a huge response!
4. Reward people for their Like or Follow. Share valuable information, offer special deals and always keep things fresh and new. Competitions work especially well for a dental practice, adding value and encouraging interaction.
5. Constantly monitor. If someone speaks to you, they expect a prompt answer – if you don’t reply quickly, the opportunity can be lost. Take the time to respond carefully and thoroughly. Use a dashboard like Hoot Suite to manage and measure all of your social networks in one place.
6. Don’t Like / Follow everyone. Big numbers do not necessarily equate to a successful social media campaign. As a Twitter rule of thumb, try to keep the number of people you are following, lower than your followers. Irrelevant accounts that exchange a Follow for a Follow add no value.
7. Ask for Likes and Follows. Don’t be afraid to ask people to Like your page or Follow your account. Put a request in your email signature and on your website, blog and stationery. It is important that you incorporate your social media into all aspects of your marketing.
8. Use caution if delegating your social marketing. Very simply, it’s your reputation on the line!
