Twitter has recently amended its terms of service and changed the rules in regards to the usage of the Auto Follow Back. Basically you can no longer purchase or subscribe to a service that will automatically follower a user back, who has chosen to follow you. Auto welcome messages (like “Thanks for the Follow”) are still allowed.
There is a culture on Twitter that essentially says if someone follows you, then you should follow them back and that the quickest way to build a large following base is to go and start following people en mass. I couldn't disagree more with that practice!
In this move, Twitter is basically trying to diminish “aggressive following” and states – “Aggressive following is defined as indiscriminately following hundreds of accounts just to garner attention. However, following a few users if their accounts seem interesting is normal and is not considered aggressive.”
Twitter prefers that you manually review your new followers and decide if you want to follow them back or not and to do so manually vs. blindly following anyone – which I for one, completely agree with. Just follow people who are of interest to you – simple!
