I’ve recently bought and moved into a new home… I know .. yeah me!! Now that the dust is beginning to settle (literally), my concern for the new pad is that I get too used to things being where they are.

I viewed the house full of hopes and dreams of clutter free surfaces, beautiful artwork that actually means something to me and space.. lots and lots of space… That is all a long way off. The reality is that as time goes on and my need to just get on with my life means I am in danger of putting up with things just as they are and forgetting about the big picture.

Your practice website can be viewed in the same way. The once proud emblem of the practice gets comfortable. ‘It works, so why fix it’ mentality sets in and the website and it’s users begin to suffer from your complacency.

So how can you step back and see that big picture?

There are some telltale signs that your website is due for a re-design.

Study your Bounce Rate (the rate at which a user clicks on your site, and then clicks away with no action taken)

A high – or worse –  increasing Bounce Rate indicates that your website is no longer hitting the mark with users.

Internet behaviour is fickle. Nowadays users click all over the search results page to find what they are looking for. If a user searches for ‘private dentist wealthy town’, their subconscious is already constructing an image of what to expect when they come to your website.

Your website is the very first point of contact they will have with you. If you are the only private dentist in Wealthy Town, you might be able to ride on an old tired website for a while, but as soon as some savvy competitors come in, wave goodbye to that easy ride as you begin to lose patients to a more appealing website.

Don’t ignore mobile statistics

Even if your website has been made responsive, the chances are that if that conversion was done for a tired looking design, your patients will not be getting the same user experience they have come to nowadays expect on a mobile device.

We’ve seen mobile visits over take PC’s for the last year and a half. Often it’s those websites with weak mobile or older responsive conversions that have the higher Bounce Rates.

Tackle the problem head on, eat the frog, and get the website re-designed for better user engagement, delighted patients and new appointments booked.

Take a long hard look

Really look at your website. Look at it as if you were a patient.

You’re a private dental practice in an affluent town; does your website deliver that message?

You’re an orthodontist in a bustling Uni city; does your website appeal to those younger adults?

You’re a referral practice wanting to grow your professional status; would the dentist in you refer to your practice?

Step into your patients shoes

By thinking like your patients and understanding what they need and want to see from a practice website also helps to diagnose your re-design needs. Your patients will be looking at other websites across the internet daily.
