You may have heard over the last few months that new top-level domains have become available.
.Dental and .Dentist might have been the ones that caught your eye. But do domains like these actually improve your rankings?
Well, a few years ago Google did give websites a bit of an advantage if they had keywords in their domain. But they saw many companies purchasing domain names with keywords in them just for a boost in rankings and they decided to place less weight on this factor.
However, a lawyer decided to move from a .com domain to a .attorney domain and did see a boost in his organic rankings. So was this just a coincidence? or are Google favouring these new domains?
John Mueller, from Google, has addressed this claim and simply denies the fact that these new domains would result in a boost just by using them. He also urges people not to switch to these domains for “vague promises” of ranking boosts.
In my opinion, I don’t think it is currently wise to change to a .dentist or .dental domain as users are not familiar with domains like these and might consider them to be spammy.
However, it does no harm to purchase them for future use if necessary.
