A client of mine said he saw a business listing coming up for a particular search term. But, the listing didn’t even mention their actual practice name! In fact, it was filled with multiple keywords.
Now you would have thought by reporting this type of spammy activity in Google’s search results they would remove it. But, over a month later it is still there!
It would seem that I’m not the only one who has been having this issue. Search Engine Land have also noticed this type of activity and Google seemingly not taking any action.
Below are a few examples of spammy Google listings that Search Engine Land have noticed:
Improper Business Name
Google’s own guidelines, in short, state that “Adding unnecessary information to your name…….is not permitted”.
Now, just like what I have experienced above, it seems that Google are either ignoring their own rules or are taking a very long time to do anything about it.
Locations that don’t exist
Looking to boost your visibility in surround locations? Well, according to Search Engine Land, many businesses are setting up P.O. boxes in other locations they wish to have a presence in. Then setting up a Google My Business listing, and sending the verification postcard to the P.O. Box to verify the listing.
Whilst it seems that Google are currently doing nothing about these types of spammy activity, it will likely only be a matter of time before they remove and prevent these types of listings, and possibly penalise these businesses.
It is best not to do anything considered spammy for your business listing as it might harm your online presence in the long run.
