Why social proof still matters (even if it’s not directly getting you new patients)

social proof

“I know we should have a social media presence, but I don’t think it’s actually bringing in new patients, so what does it actually do”

It’s a statement we hear from numerous clients, and it’s a fair point. But it’s based on a slightly wrong assumption about what social proof is actually for.

Social media, your Google Business Profile, and your reviews aren’t meant to compete with search or recommendations for new patient numbers. They’re meant to back them up. And in 2026, that backup is often the difference between someone finding you and someone actually booking.

What do we mean by social proof?

Social proof is the reassurance a patient looks for before they commit to a practice they haven’t used before.

Patients today research before they call. Before they pick up the phone or click “book now,” most will:

  • Check your Google reviews
  • Scroll through your recent social posts
  • See whether you’re still active online
  • Notice if your branding looks consistent across platforms
  • Form a quick judgement on whether you look professional and trustworthy

None of this needs to go viral. It just needs to hold up under a bit of scrutiny. If someone searches “dentist near me” or gets a recommendation from a friend, and your online presence looks neglected or inconsistent, there’s a good chance they’ll keep looking rather than book with you.

Your Google Business Profile is doing more than you think

We’ve written before about how rankings and traffic don’t always move together anymore. The same shift is playing out with Google Business Profile, which has quietly become one of the most influential pieces of your online presence.

It’s no longer just a listing with your address and opening hours. It directly affects:

  • Your local search visibility
  • How likely people are to click through to your site
  • What AI-driven search tools surface when someone asks a question
  • How much a prospective patient trusts you before making contact

Regular posts, accurate treatment listings, consistent contact details, and prompt review responses all feed into this. Dental SEO isn’t just about the keywords on your website anymore. It’s about whether your information is accurate and consistent everywhere a patient (or a search engine) might look for it.

AI search is changing what “being found” means

Search behaviour is shifting quickly, and we’re seeing it in the data we review for clients every month. Searches are becoming more conversational and increasingly powered by AI tools that pull from sources they consider trustworthy, including your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your social channels.

When someone asks an AI assistant “who’s a good dentist near me” or “who offers Invisalign in [location]”, that tool is drawing on structured, current information, not just your website’s keywords.

This means a website that gets reviewed once every few years and then left alone isn’t enough. If your information is inconsistent across platforms, or your practice looks inactive, your visibility in these newer types of search will suffer, even if your rankings on a traditional search results page still look ok.

Where social media fits in

Social media probably isn’t going to be the thing that fills your diary on its own, and we wouldn’t tell you otherwise. But it plays a genuine supporting role in a wider dental marketing strategy. Done consistently, it:

  • Reinforces the recommendations people are already hearing about you
  • Builds familiarity with your brand before someone even makes contact
  • Puts a real face to your team
  • Highlights the treatments and expertise you offer
  • Builds brand recognition over time

The differentiator isn’t how flashy your posts are; it’s consistency. Post regularly. Keep your branding aligned. Make sure your information matches across your website, your socials, and your Google Business Profile. None of these channels work particularly well in isolation. They work because they support each other.

Search gets you found. Social proof gets you booked.

It isn’t really a choice between search, recommendations, and social proof. All three need to be working together:

  • Search creates visibility.
  • Recommendations create intent.
  • Social proof creates the confidence to follow through.

Across the practices we work with, the ones with consistent branding, active profiles, and aligned messaging tend to convert more of their enquiries, even when their traffic levels look similar to practices that aren’t converting as well.

Modern dental marketing isn’t about picking the right single tactic anymore. It’s about making sure everything lines up.

Not sure where you stand?

If you’re not certain whether your online presence is helping or quietly working against you, it’s worth finding out.

We work exclusively with dental practices, and we can review your Google Business Profile, social channels, and website together to see what’s driving your enquiries and what might be holding them back.
