Google+ has evolved quite a bit since its original launch two years ago, with today seeing the social network’s latest update- a complete redesign!
Google+ has launched 41 new features in total as part of the redesign, with many social commentaries likening the redesign to a mash up between Pinterest and Facebook, particularly due to the new emphasis on photography.
The new web version of the social network will be more familiar to those users who use Google+ on the iPad and other mobile devices, as the website layout now contains three columns in the same way as the iPad version. Google+ wants to encourage users to consume more content rather than navigating, therefore, the multi column design has been introduced to allow the user to scan items quickly, rather than endlessly scrolling through previous posts.
Google+ has also moved away from so called ‘flat design’. This is because Google+ will use hashtags to categorise posts (whether user generated or automatic) which you can click to flip the ‘card’ and allowing you to find similar information on the topic.
“Behind the scenes, we’ll also identify and rank relevant conversations across the network,” Google said. “When you click on the related hashtag, we’ll flip the card, and let you browse related content inline.”
Another new feature is ‘Auto Awesome’ (yes it’s really called that!)
“If you upload a sequence of photos, we’ll try and animate them automatically,” Google said in a statement. “Or if you send us a few family portraits, we’ll find everyone’s best smile, and stitch them together into a single shot. Likewise with panoramas, filmstrips, and a whole lot more. We call these kinds of enhancements Auto Awesome.”
So if you haven’t logged in to your Google+ account for a while it’s definitely worth a second look!
