SEO often comes as an afterthought to dental practices, not being fully aware of the long term advantages. Work is outsourced to professional agencies as their expertise is becoming ever more valuable as technology grows more complex. Without search engines many surgeries may have remained small and unknown. With effective SEO, even smaller practices can compete with the major players.

There is much debate as to whether outsourcing SEO to professionals is a more worthy investment than a practice doing the work in-house. Why spend all the time doing it yourself when you could simply hire someone to do it for you? SEO should be a habit, a daily routine, as good SEO takes work. Hiring an outside agency is often a worthy investment especially as the internet is constantly evolving. It takes years of practice to get fast, effective results and when practices plan SEO by themselves it often does not happen due to other work deadlines. SEO agencies have devoted all of their time in making search engine friendly websites. These skills cannot be learnt overnight; it takes time to understand how to optimise a site.

IN-HOUSE

If you’re doing SEO within the practice, most of your investment will be time rather than money. Your return will be the stream of people who are seeking the treatments that you offer. Only basic knowledge of HTML is required to apply SEO to a website. Staff would simply need to understand what the search engines look for, what they want to see, or view as important. While there may be an intimidating amount of essential things to know and remember in order to be a successful optimiser, it is not completely impossible.

SEO has a strange reputation where some understand and use it, some hate and fear it and others think they understand it but underrate its importance. When approaching SEO you need time to understand the characteristics behind the traffic; often knowledge is what dental practices lack and this is where the need for an SEO agency comes into place. Whilst providing professional services, the most important role falls not to the technology, but to staff competence.
