Are you running, or thinking about running, some Facebook ads? If so, pay attention to how fast your site loads, as Facebook will certainly be taking a closer look at it.
Facebook are taking users’ mobile experiences very seriously and recognise that slow loading websites are one of the biggest factors in site abandonment.
In a post in their news section, they say:
“…we’re working to improve advert experiences for people by considering website performance and a person’s network connection in our advert auction and delivery system.”
Now, Facebook are trying to help advertisers by introducing something called prefetching.
Prefetching is when Facebook predicts that a user is likely to click on an ad and will prefetch/load the initial HTML of the page to help with loading the webpage faster. Whilst this can be useful, it relies on a prediction Facebook has made. And even if your HTML is prefetched other elements of the webpage e.g. CSS, Javascript and images are not, which might be the major cause of your slow loading webpage.

What are the potential issues for advertisers who have slow loading sites? It is a bit unclear, but it might result in higher costs for those with slower sites. Facebook will likely be favouring faster loading sites and therefore in order for slower loading sites to compete they might need to pay more.
