Tips on writing for social media

Social media success requires strong writing skills, however writing great social media content doesn’t have to be difficult.

Every social post you publish reflects on your brand, therefore a shareworthy post needs to be one that others find enough value in to share with friends and family. It’s about starting a conversation and engaging with others in your network. Ask questions, offer insight, and avoid the “business-speak” writing. People want to share things their audience will find valuable. This could mean content that’s helpful, entertaining, or otherwise worth paying attention to.

Instead of writing one message for every network, tailor your messaging to each one individually. To do this, it helps to understand the purpose of each network, and what works best on each one. Despite each network having its own quirks and best practices, there are some standard best practices that generally apply to most networks. Developing a simple style can help with this:

  • Audience/Persona Summary
  • Social Media Brand Voice
  • Tone
  • Branding
  • Message Types

Try writing posts that convey a clear benefit. If you create how-to content, consider writing copy that hints at what the linked article will help readers do. You can also create unlinked social messages that include a useful tip in your post copy or image copy.

You need to:

  • Build Trust
  • Be Friendly
  • Post with Purpose
  • Be Clear And Concise – Avoid complex language and use short sentences. People skim on social media, so punchy posts tend to work better
  • Use Bigger and Better Images
  • Link back to the website in your posts
  • Write Stuff People Want To Share – This requires understanding why people share content
  • If your post is linking to an external page, then your post messaging needs to match your landing page messaging.
