The top ten viral videos of 2013 have been announced. What does it take for a piece of content to go viral? What’s the big secret? Unfortunately there isn’t one.
James Whatley, social media director at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising London, says:
“You may as well read an instruction manual on how to win the lottery…Yes, you might pick up a few tips, but any major success will be purely accidental.”
Rather than trying to focus on creating content which could go viral, it’s better to look at what your patients may find informative or entertaining; tell a story and then promote from there.
“Big budget campaigns by big brands achieve big results, certainly – but that’s not achievable for every business,” says Kate Cooper, managing director at social media agency Bloom Worldwide. No brand should be putting together online content purely with the goal of “going viral” in any case, she says. “It’s too hit and miss.”
Instead, use content to promote your practice and services, such as videos, photos, polls and quizzes. These are easy to make and relatively cheap to produce, in order to capture your audience’s attention. For example, your hygienist could create ‘how to’ videos for flossing or your practice manager could take photos of fun moments in your practice.
Don’t be scared off by bigger company’s social media strategies with sky high production value, focus on creating good content which is timely, relevant and compelling and you will reap the rewards!
