YouTube can be a great source of traffic. If you are considering using this platform or are already using it then you might want to give your videos the best chance of being seen as YouTube can be an incredibly crowded place.

Video SEO (search engine optimisation) can help improve the chances that your videos are seen. Whilst YouTube’s ranking algorithm isn’t as complex as Google’s there are still important signals that YouTube uses to help with ranking videos:

  • Title tag
  • Audience retention
  • Keywords in description
  • Video length
  • Number of subscribers after watching
  • Comments
  • Likes and dislikes

With this in mind try utilising some of the following tips to help improve the likelihood that your video is seen:

  • Write long descriptions – YouTube, as yet, cannot watch or listen to your video so providing a detailed description about the video can help YouTube understand what the video is about. The more YouTube knows about the video the more confidently it can rank it.
  • Get more video views – try posting a link to the video on online communities to try and drive more traffic and more views of the video. Answering questions in online communities or writing a relevant blog and then adding the link to the video on YouTube can help further encourage people to view the video.
  • Increase the number of subscribers and video likes – YouTube puts a lot of weight on user experience. Therefore providing strong calls to action at the end of your videos (e.g. if you found the video useful please like it) might help improve the number of subscribers etc.
