So everyone keeps telling you that you need to start using social media for your practice; which social networks are best for you? Should you be on all of them? Should you just select one? Here are some facts and figures about the most popular social media sites, so that you can make an informed choice about what suits your practice’s needs.

Facebook:

845million users

Best for: interacting on a more personal level with your contacts
Secret weapon: Facebook pages, which house all of the information about your practice in one place.
Who uses it? The largest demographic is 21-24 year olds, closely followed by 18-20 year olds and 35-44 year olds.
What to share: Blog posts, videos, photos, questions and answers.
Drawbacks: Trying to connect to too many people could dilute your message

Twitter:

140million active users

Best for: short to the point updates, monitoring conversations about your brand, finding potential customers.
Secret weapon: great for addressing customer concerns on the spot and in front of your entire audience.
Who uses it? Highest users are females aged between 31-49 followed by 18-29 year olds
What to share: links which are relevant to your audience, hashtags, questions to interact with followers.

LinkedIn:

150million users

Best for: Showing off your professional accomplishments and linking to others in your industry
Secret weapon: Use groups to show your expertise by answering common questions.
Who uses it: largest group is 35-44 year old males
What to share: relevant content with either your followers or groups.

Google+

100 million users

Best for: starting conversations and adding specific people to it
Secret weapon: Circles; you can group your followers and send messages to each group separately to tailor your marketing
Who uses it: Males who tend to be in technical professions eg web designers, engineers, marketers.
What to share: Insight, blog posts, questions and answers relevant to your industry.
