The service is going to feature in a new unscripted series that will “harness Twitter to put players on the trail of celebrities in an interactive, competitive format”. No, I am not sure what that means and there are no further details as yet.
But it does appear to be a serious (and horrifying) proposition. The social-networking service has teamed with Reveille productions (The Office and Ugly Betty) and Brillstein Entertainment Partners (The Sopranos) for the production.
“Twitter is transforming the way people communicate, especially celebrities and their fans,” said Reveille managing director Howard T. Owens, who expects the new project to “unlock Twitter’s potential on TV.”
Biz Stone, Twitter co-founder, played down reports that this was going to be THE official Twitter TV show.
In dealing with networks and production companies we sometimes have simple agreements. Regarding the Reveille and Brillstein project reported today, we have a lightweight, non-exclusive, agreement with the producers which helps them move forward more freely.
Twitter’s open approach might have the power to transform television – the dominant communications receiver worldwide. We’re very excited to see where these experiments take us.
That might be no idle boast. Twitter is seeing remarkable growth. comScore recently released its worldwide numbers and it estimates Twitter’s global unique visitors in April was 32 million, up from 19 million in March. And that is not counting all those visitors who use desktop applications like Tweetdeck or their mobiles to access Twitter. 32 million is bigger those other giants of internet traffic, Digg, the New York Times and LinkedIn.
But there is still lots that is wrong with Twitter – it has a tired home page and desperately needs better ways to organise who you follow and, most importantly, a business model. Biz Stone talks through many of these things with Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan today. It is worth a read.
