I think this latest tie-up is a smart move from Facebook – especially considering the announcement from Google last week about their own video messaging platform. Personally, I don’t use Skype a lot but I can see how integrating it into Facebook adds to its appeal – presuming it’s all achievable at the touch of a button. I’ll certainly be tempted to give it a try, if only out of intrigue.
Any which way, another big statement from Facebook – anything Google can do…
Reports suggest Facebook and Skype will announce a tie-up this week that will allow video chat on the social network.
Facebook is to make a major announcement on Wednesday which, according to TechCrunch, will reveal details of its first video message service.
A smaller tie-up already allows Skype users to instant-message their Facebook friends using the voice-over-IP service.
Both companies have remained quiet over any new arrangement, but it would come just a week after Google announced its social video messaging platform, Hangouts, within Google+.
A move would come at the same time as Skype’s $8.5bn (£5.29bn) acquisition by Microsoft is finalised. Microsoft made the initial bid in May but had to wait for clearance from US regulators the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice before the deal could move further.
Microsoft also has a minority stake in Facebook.
