Do you use Instagram to promote your dental practice? Have you heard about the recent ‘uproar’ about proposed changes to the home feed?
Instagram has announced that it is changing its feed to show images in a different order, but you don’t need to panic, and you definitely don’t need to activate notifications for everyone you follow.
The Easter weekend saw hundreds of users begging their followers to turn on a feature that would send alerts whenever a new photo is posted, amid panic that the timeline changes would demote their photos into obscurity.
Even celebrities such as Ellie Goulding and The Kardashians were among those asking followers to activate alerts by tapping the ellipsis on the top right of photos and selecting “turn on post notifications”.
But happily for those who already suffer from their phones vibrating seemingly every minute, there’s actually no need at the present moment to turn on notifications for those whom you follow.
It is true that Instagram will be changing its feed: It announced earlier this month that it would follow Facebook and Twitter in using an algorithm that moves posts it thinks you want to see to the top of the feed, rather than simply ordering them chronologically.
However, it’s unclear exactly how or why the panic about the timeline changes began and spread so rapidly two weeks after Instagram’s original announcement, with some expecting the updated timeline to be introduced this week.
The change is, in fact, not likely to come for some time as Instagram has only just begun experimenting with the new feed.
And besides, algorithms aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Thanks to its rising popularity, Instagram is getting more crowded and according to company, approximately 70% of images on a user’s feed are never seen.
Amid the panic, Instagram sent the following update:
“We’re listening and we assure you nothing is changing with your feed right now. We promise to let you know when changes roll out broadly,”
