When searching for something on Google you don’t think about what Google is really doing for you. You type what you want to find and, voila! You have exactly what you were looking for on your screen in 0.2 seconds; but what is Google really doing for you?
A quick answer would be ‘searching’ but, we prefer to see it as ‘recommending’. Google doesn’t just match your search phrase to websites that contain as many matches to that phrase as possible, that would lead to a web page full of keyword packed sentences. After all, you don’t see web pages with ‘Dentist Bournemouth’ repetitively written across it. Why? Google is smart, and Google doesn’t want to recommend anything other than an honest and skilled dentist when you go looking for one.
So how does Google recommend websites? Well, the best way to look at it would be from a human perspective. If you were given 10 Dentist websites written down on a piece of paper, listing all of the reviews, the amount of content, pictures, links and all other relevant information you would need to make an informed decision. Which one would you recommend first when your friend asks you for the best dentist in the area (and no, you can’t use Google).
Personally, we would look at the distance between the friend and the practice, who has the best reviews, which website is the best in regards to user experience, the content, and the list goes on…
Once you hand your friend the piece of paper with your recommended website, well… you’ve just conducted your very own manual ‘Google Search’.
So, how can we use this knowledge and put it to practice? We already know that Google relies on a lot of the stated information to recommend websites to the searcher e.g. location, reviews, mobile optimised websites. What we want to do is extend our knowledge in SEO. Google is very secretive about what they use to rank a website, but we feel, the best way to look at it is “Would I take that into account if I were to recommend this website to a friend?” If you do, Google probably does too.
What a great friend Google is!
