Top Social Media Monitoring Tools

30 October 2014 | | Marketing, Social Media

The key to getting the most out of your social media is listening to what your audience has to say about you, analysing the data and using all those insights to improve on your marketing moving forward.

Here is a list of some of the best free monitoring tools:

1) Hootsuite

Hootsuite is one of the best free social media management tools available and covers multiple social networks, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+, Foursquare, MySpace, WordPress, TrendSpottr and Mixi. It helps you keep track and manage many social network channels.

It can enable you to monitor what people are saying about your practice and help you respond instantly. You can view streams from multiple networks, post updates or reply directly. With so many social networks for businesses to manage, it’s no doubt management tools have become so popular and relied upon by many companies today.

2) Social Mention

Social Mention monitors over a hundred social media sites and can provide you with free daily email alerts of your practice, brand, marketing campaign, industry specific news or a competitor. The tool can be used to locate mentions across the board or you can choose to search specifically for keywords identified in video, blogs, events, bookmarks, comments, news, Q&A format and audio media.

  • Sentiment: Tells you whether mentions are positive, negative, or neutral giving you an overall view of how your practice or search query is being talked about in social media.
  • Top Users: Reports who is talking about the subject the most
  • Top Hash Tags: Reports what popular hash tags are being used in association with your search query
  • Post Rank: PostRank is a scoring system to rank any kind of online content to see how interesting or relevant people have found an item to be.
  • Sources: Indicates where the blog sources are coming from

3) TweetReach

TweetReach is a simple way to measure how far something traveled on Twitter and provides you with a set of metrics to help you understand a particular topic being searched for. It is a good way of finding out who are your most influential followers, showing you the right people you should be targeting with the aim to share and promote online content.

We search Twitter for all mentions of a search term and generate a report with detailed information about that term’s reach on Twitter. We measure the number of different people who saw tweets about something, as well as how many total impressions were generated. Anyone can run a quick report at no cost but it will only search for the 50 most recent tweets on your search term.

4) Twazzup

Twazzup is great for social media beginners looking for a Twitter monitoring tool and search experience. It takes everything that Twitter has to offer and lets users find what interests them the most. You just enter the name or business you want to track and you instantly get real-time updates including unique search results:

  • Popular Tweets: Popular tweets not neccessarily to do with the topic searched for
  • Top Trendmakers: Accounts whose tweets are driving conversation
  • Related Photos: Related photos from Twitpic, updated in real time
  • Most Popular Links: Links most often included in tweets related to the keyword you are searching for

5) IceRocket

The main difference between using search engines vs. social media is that you’ll usually find new content faster through social and depending on who you’re following and who they’re following/retweeting, you’ll see a lot of content that you might not have found in the search engines.

There are some great social media tools that can help including IceRocket which has a good “Search All” functionality giving you recent results from the blogosphere, Facebook, and Twitter. The tool allows you to choose the periods of time you are interested in monitoring. It can be used for keeping an eye on blogging activity, as they have around 200 million blogs in their database and also provide the possibility of finding the latest trend terms related to your search.

6) TweetDeck

TweetDeck is a great tool for scheduling tweets and monitoring your interactions and messages, as well as tracking hashtags and managing multiple accounts.

  • Twitter Streams: You can customize Twitter columns and create streams for certain people. This allows you the freedom to pick and choose what kind of Twitter activity you want to see, from whom you want to see it and you can also mute hashtags.
  • Scheduling Posts: Schedule posts for the future to save them the time and worry of missing the boat on a particular topic.
  • Custom Link Shortening: You don’t want tweets to look dis-organised, you want to keep things short and snappy. One of the most important things you can do is use shortened URLs when linking off-site. While you’re tweeting, just put the
  • URL into its “add a link” textbox and click Shrink.
  • Column-Based Management: You will be able to see your timeline, interactions, followers, favorites, direct messages, personalised Twitter lists and trending topics under one dashboard.

7) Reachli

The image promoting site, Reachli, helps companies measure their image and video shared content with an array of tools. You are able to analyse the types of images that best suit your audience. Currently Reachli targets Pinterest but may expand in the future for more niche sites that target visual sharing into their insights.

8) SproutSocial

Sprout Social is an integral social media management tool created to help businesses grow their social media presence. The platform currently offers users the ability to integrate with Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Zendesk and UserVoice.

  • Analytics – Reports engagement, impressions, shares and the demographics of fans, followers and influencers. You can find out which posts are the most influential and tailor messages to your most prominent demographic.
