The last two months have seen big changes to the SERP display on Google. The pace and depth of change appear arbitrary, however the overall effect is to ‘clean-slate’ the way SERPS are displayed.
The following changes were made;
1) Authorship Image Removed
No longer will we be able to link a SERP with an image from a Google + page. This was being phased out, but it appears that in the last month Google has totally removed this feature. The rich snippet is still featured with the authors name, but the number of people in the authors Google+ Circle has also been removed.
2) Video Thumbnails only for
Most publishers of video content aside from the very big contributors (YouTube etc) have seen their video snippets removed from their listing. Whilst this at first appears like a blow to the hard efforts put into video creation, research conducted by Moz.com show that URL’s with video content are still receiving a normal if not increased levels of traffic.
Whilst the above has spring cleaned the SERPS, its with a sense of sadness that we’ve watched them go. Not least for a dental practice, where a friendly image of the principal dentist next to a listing can help to break down the barriers ahead of a nervous patient.
The removal of these features only heighten the effect of more traditional click-through rate optimisation techniques, such as strong titles, compelling meta descriptions, rich snippets (the ones remaining) and brand building.
