It has been reported that Twitter is thrashing Facebook as the medium of choice for comments regarding the Olympic games; with statistics showing that 97% of mentions referring to the Olympic opening ceremony was placed on twitter.
London 2012 is the first Olympic games to see twitter play such a major role, as during Beijing 2008 the social networking site was still very much in its infancy. Since Friday’s Opening ceremony, the Olympics has been mentioned by more than 10million users, with British cycling Silver medallist Lizzie Armisted gaining followers at a rate of 500 per second straight after her win.
Twitter’s manager of editorial programming, Andrew Fitzgerald, said: “The biggest spike in Twitter conversation during the Opening Ceremony? When Rowan Atkinson, a.k.a. Mr Bean, appeared in a hilariously memorable homage to the Olympians of Chariots of Fire.”
However, many are unhappy with the way that the Olympic games are being covered by social networking sites due to ‘spoilers’ and abusive messages to the athletes.
