As 2014 draws to a close, Google has released an insight into some of the top searches made using their search engines globally over the course of this year.
Robin Williams, whose untimely passing dominated headlines in summer 2014, was the most searched term globally, followed by the World Cup. Ebola proved to be a global concern and the missing Malaysia Airlines flight was one of the top four searches in the world.
The mobile game Flappy Bird was the fifth most searched term, possibly because the game disappeared from both iTunes and Google Play last February, as a result of developer Dong Nguyen’s concerns over what he called “an addictive product.” The ALSIce Bucket Challenge was the sixth most Googled term globally.
Celebrities who dominated search this year included Conchita Wurst, who became the first person to ever win the Eurovision song contest whilst wearing drag, along with actress Jennifer Lawrence, whose photo hacking scandal was fodder for global gossip.
The World Cup had a large impact on which sportsmen trended in 2014. The most searched sportsman was Columbia’s James Rodriguez, whose impressive performance during the FIFA World Cup made him a star.
Unfortunately many Google searches in 2014 reflected grim headlines. Ebola, Ukraine and ISIS were all heavy on our minds. However, a few bright spots, such as Disney’s film Frozen, the World Cup, and the Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised millions for the ALS Foundation, seemed to lift the Internet’s spirits in the midst of hard times.
