Trekking to Machu Picchu has been on my bucket list for many years and the fact that I’m doing it for such an incredible cause, to raise money for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice, makes it even more rewarding.
Over 1.2 million people visit Machu Picchu every year, many of which either trek the Inca Trail or one of the alternative trails to the ancient city. The Inca trail has all the fame, but we’ll be walking the Salkantay trek as it’s less crowded and passes through more breathtaking and varied landscapes, past Inca ruins and still ends at Machu Picchu.
It’s traditionally done in 4 days reaching Machu Picchu on day 5 and the route is said to be more difficult as it reaches even higher altitudes.
When we first arrive in Cusco, simple activities such as walking upstairs will feel more laboured than expected due to the altitude. The first two days in Cusco are acclimatisation days which will give our body a chance to adjust!
During the trek, we will pass through several microclimates, the highest mountain we’ll cross stands at 4,630m above sea level (just over half the height of Everest).
We’ll also be sleeping at campsites and at night the temperature can get as low as -15 degrees!
All of this is worth it so that we can raise money for this amazing charity, who provide support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition!
This time next week, I will be packed up, ready to make my way up to Heathrow to catch my flight to Paris, then on to Lima and finally on to Cusco in Peru.

What could your money go towards?
£20 could pay for some relaxing and unwinding bedtime story books for quiet moments in the hospice.
£30 could pay for materials for lots of sticking, gluing and creative fun with their play workers.
£65 could pay for a two hour session with a play worker to help a child to explore and develop through play.
£100 could pay for 3 hours of 1-2-1 time with a sibling worker for the brother or sister of a poorly child, so they can have some time just for them to relax, have fun and talk with someone who understands how they’re feeling.
£250 could pay for a unique memory box for a recently bereaved family, including a special photo book and a cast of their child’s hand.
